BOOK SERIES NO. 68 (Year 2009)
This volume represents the transactions of the workshop on African Languages in Education in Benin: Problems and Prospects, which was held in Cotonou, Benin, 11 – 12 May 2009. The attendance of the workshop was very good and the discussions rich. The emergent consensus was that local languages which are the mother-tongue languages of the people of Benin are vital for successful education and development of the country. This is also in line with the findings of UN, UNESCO and other similar bodies.
Thirteen papers are represented in this volume, each one with invited comments. They cover a broad terrain of the issues which impinge on the topic of the workshop. They represent the ideas of senior Benin scholars in the field. They are therefore at the cutting-edge of expertise on the issue.
This work, sponsored by the Centre for Advanced Studies of African Society (CASAS) based in Cape Town, forms part of CASAS’ Africa-wide mandate to facilitate the harmonization and standardization of African language orthographies and the development of African languages for science and technological education. CASAS will continue to support such endeavours in Africa.
