BOOK SERIES NO. 63 (Year 2009)
A Grammatical Analysis of Yorùbá Mòfòlí. The scope and emphasis of this book entitled “Ìtúpalè? Gírámà Yorùbá Mòfòlí (A Grammatical Analysis of Yoruba Mòfòlí)” is dialect syntax. The book is on Yorùbá dialectology. The book provides an overview of the grammatical structure of Mòfòlí, a dialect of the Yorùbá language spoken outside Nigeria. Speakers of Mòfòlí dialect reside mainly in Kétu city, in the PlateauState of the Republic of Bénin. According to Awobuluyi (1998:9), “no linguistic research has ever been carried out on it”. In the field of linguistics, the Yorùbá populations outside Nigeria are hardly ever discussed, largely unknown and poorly defined. Some of the syntactic components examined in this book are Tense notions (Future/Non-Future), Aspectual contrasts (Perfective/ Imperfective – Progressive/Habitual), Negation, High Tone Syllable (HTS), Modal Systems (Potential/Obligative/ Probability), etc. These formatives occur in combinations of varying lengths between the subject and the main verb of the Yorùbá Mòfòlí sentences. The analysis of data is carried out within the theoretical framework of Government and Binding (GB).
